TRAVEL JOURNALS
During my employment with the Alberta Teachers' Association (ATA) I was priveleged to be assigned responsibility for its international programs. The Association assigned one percent of its annual net budget to support teachers and their organizations in Southern Countries. The main program was participation in Project Overseas, the key development assistance program operated by the Canadian Teachers' Federation (CTF), Canada's national teachers' organization. In addition to this program, which annually saw up to 13 Alberta teachers taking part along with approximately 40 teachers from other provincial teacher organizations, the ATA funded and provided professional support for several other teacher-to-teacher programs operated under CTF's development program umbrella.
It was an honour to represent the ATA and the CTF on a number of visits overseas throughout my career. My first trip was to India in March 1986 along with Bob Gordon, then recently retired as general secretary of the Manitoba Teachers' Society. We worked with the All-India Primary Teachers' Federation. My last visit was to Mozambique in July and August 2010 to work with the Organizacao Nacional Dos Professores (ONP). My Canadian colleagues on that visit were Carol Baciao and Adilia Fernandes, both Portuguese-speaking women from Toronto and superb teachers.
This section is nearing completion. Photographs for all of the travels can be found just before the start of each journal. The completed journal for the India journey is all that needs to be transcribed and placed on the website.
Photographs follow the sequence of the journals, which you may therefore want to read before watching the slide shows.
Happy Trails.
