These photographs were taken over a three-day period late in July and illustrate some of the events, scenes and people that I encountered on my travels. The first of the pictures were made on the way to Mossleigh, where I enjoyed some dessert and coffee at the Aspen Crossing Railroad station. The images of barrel racing were made at the 2018 Rockyford Rodeo. I spent Friday afternoon there watching the ladies' barrel racing event and very much enjoyed seeing the exquisite horsemanship of the riders and the superb horses that they rode. Next came a cross-country jaunt on gravel roads to Rosebud for a snack and a chance to find more photographic subjects in that colourful little community. Leaving the Thorn Rose Cafe, I was rearranging my camera lenses on the trunk of my car when a man asked if I was a professional photographer. He and his companion were just recently married and he wondered if I would photograph them. So, of course, I did.
To the south and east of Rosebud a series of high hills drew my attention and I directed the trusty C230 onto roads that let me explore the area in some detail. I was heading toward Hussar, following county gravel roads on a more-or-less south easterly direction. Coming to the top of a rise, I encountered a large gas plant and saw to the west an old-fashioned country elevator. I drove toward it, now paralleling the abandoned CPR line that once ran from Bassano up to the Calgary-Drumheller line, until I encountered a 50 Kilometre speed zone. Why a speed zone, I wondered, as there were only two or three houses in sight. I was so curious that I pulled off the county road and drove around what were once a couple of blocks of a little town. Stopping near a camp trailer, I visited with two "local" people who gave me a very nice history of the once prosperous town of Chancellor, Alberta.
Two very nice days of travel, exploration and meeting interesting people.
